How to get to Facultad de Informática

The conference will be held in Madrid. The Airport of the city is called “Madrid-Barajas”, and it is possible to travel from the Airport to any place in the city by Metro. You can find more information about how to get to Madrid in the travel section.

The Facultad de Informática (Computer Science Faculty) is located in this address: Calle Profesor José García Santesmases, 9. It is inside the campus of Ciudad Universitaria. It is easy to get there by Metro, the nearest stop is “Ciudad Universitaria”, in the line number 6, “Circular” (the grey one). The campus is located in the west of Madrid, in the “Moncloa” area. It’s the main Universitary Campus in the city.

It is a reasonable walk from there to the faculty (1.6 km), but nice if the weather is reasonable. You turn right as you come out of the underground and follow Avenida Complutense towards the north till it reaches a sort of roundabout (the structure is there, but cars going accross as you come actually drive through the center of it as well as going round). From there on there is one way system that encircles some of the university sport facilities. At the opposite end of that one way system there is a proper roundabout, and our faculty is off the left (follow the line of pine trees going down hill to an ugly brick building that you should be able to see from the roundabout).

If you do not want to walk, you can take a bus as you come out of the underground. Numbers “82”, “F”, “G”, or “U” go basically along the same route. For “82”, “F” and “G” you have to get off just after the second roundabout. Depending on which bus you chose, it will dropp you off one side or the other of the roundabout, and you will have to find the avenue of pine trees going down hill and follow it down. Bus “U” actually goes a bit further round the sports facilities, then turns right and has a final stop at the back of the building, closer than the others. The map on the right shows the route to follow from the Metro station to the Faculty.

One ride in Metro costs 1.5€, and it is valid from the origin station to the destination, no matter how many stations you travel. It can be a good idea to purchase a “Metrobus”, a 10 rides ticket (12.20€). There are also tourist tickets. You can request information and purchase those tickets inside any Metro station.

Travelling

You can arrive in (and depart from) Madrid either by air, by train, by bus or by car.

By air

All flights arrive at Madrid-Barajas International airport (Terminals 1 and 2 are for international flights).

How to get to the city centre from the airport …

… by underground

The access to the underground (Barajas station, line no. 8) is located in Terminal 2 in the connecting corridor to parking area number 2, right in the middle of the terminal. Look for a red diamond with the word “Metro” in white!

From line no. 8 (the pink one) you can go to:

  • Mar de Cristal station, where you can take line no. 4 (the brown one) which provides a fast route into the centre of Madrid.
  • Nuevos Ministerios station (the end of line no. 8), which is in the heart of Madrid’s financial district (journey time: 12 minutes). In Nuevos Ministerios station you can connect with lines no. 6 (the grey one) and 10 (the dark blue one). Baggage Check-in desks are also available in Nuevos Ministerios station.

See underground map.

Underground trains run daily from 6:00 am to 1:30 am.

… by bus

Following this link you can find information about buses from the airport to city center. Bus service starts in Madrid at 6.00am and ends at 11.30pm. From 0.00am to 5.30am there are also public buses, but the lines are different.

… by taxi

Taxis from the airport to the centre of Madrid cost about 30€ (including airport supplements) and the journey takes 25-30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Official taxi stands are located outside each Terminal Arrival area.

Make sure you take a taxi from the official stand and not from someone offering taxis inside the terminal. You should not accept offers from taxi drivers inside the terminals as there are frequent reports of passengers being ripped off!

By train

Trains from abroad arrive at Atocha railway station, which is situated in the centre of the city.

Once you get to the arrival area of the railway station, turn right and walk till you reach a round hall. The access to the underground (Atocha Renfe station; line no. 1, the light blue one) is located just in front of you. Look for a red diamond with the word “Metro” in white.

Underground trains run daily from 6:00 am to 1:30 am.

See underground map.

If you want to take a taxi, go upstairs when you reach the round hall. Official taxi stands are located on the street.

By bus

The bus is the cheapest form of transportation in Spain. The main bus station for international travel and long distance travel in Spain is the Estación Sur de Autobuses, which is located south of the city centre.

From the arrival area you can directly reach the access to the underground (Méndez Alvaro station; line no. 6, the grey one). The access is on the -2 floor.

Underground trains run daily from 6:00 am to 1:30 am.

See underground map.

You can also take a taxi. Official taxi stands are located on the street.

By car

Driving from Portugal or France is easy, as the major highways in Spain feed into Madrid:

  • A1 Highway or Burgos Highway: it connects Madrid to France via Irún.
  • A2 Highway or Barcelona Highway: it connects Madrid to France via Portbou.
  • A5 Highway or Extremadura Highway: it connects Madrid to Lisbon and southern Portugal.
  • A6 Highway or A Coruña Highway: it connects Madrid to northern Portugal.
